The link between Reflux disease and being Overweight

Did you know that there is a strong link between Reflux disease also called Indigestion and being overweight?

In this article, I have attempted to explore the connection between Obesity and acid reflux (also known as GERD—Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease) a bit further and establishing on how they often go hand in hand. While many may experience occasional heartburn, for those living with obesity, reflux can become a chronic, painful problem with serious implications.

Excess weight puts pressure on the stomach, causing stomach acids to back up into the esophagus, leading to frequent heartburn, chest pain, and even difficulty swallowing.

Over time, untreated acid reflux can damage the esophagus, leading to conditions like esophagitis, Barrett’s esophagus, and an increased risk of esophageal cancer.

Beyond the discomfort, the relationship between obesity and reflux is part of a bigger picture. Obesity increases the risk of numerous conditions such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and sleep apnea—each of which can be aggravated by reflux. Tackling obesity is not only key to reducing the occurrence of reflux but also to improving overall health and longevity.

Are you experiencing reflux?

If you suffer from frequent reflux, addressing your weight through sustainable lifestyle changes—like a balanced diet and regular physical activity—can make a significant difference. Remember, managing weight is not just about feeling good, but also about preventing long-term health complications.

Take control of your health today—your body will thank you!

Dr Arun was speaking recently at the NIIM symposium on the topic of Obesity and Reflux disease. His talk drew a lot of interest from GPs and other practitioners in attendance.
